Many of today’s emerging health technologies no longer fit neatly into a single category like “novel therapeutic” or “medical device.” Increasingly, new healthcare products combine computers, algorithms, and novel materials with drugs and devices in new and powerful ways. As a consequence, the intellectual property (IP) landscape surrounding healthcare advances is becoming increasingly diverse and complex.

This panel will explore newer modes of discovery and development and help inventors and entrepreneurs alike further their  understanding of where new opportunities may reside and what constitutes protectable IP in this rapidly evolving environment.

Lance M. Westerhoff, Ph.D.  QuantumBio - President and General Manager

His experience includes project management and  leadership; software engineering and development; strategic planning; and fund raising efforts including angel, venture capital, and public/grant funding. He is also a published scientist with projects involving the synergistic application of quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics in the life and pharmaceutical sciences. He has successfully overseen the research, development, and deployment of advanced technology within the Company, and through his extensive contacts, he has been able to market these tools to the pharmaceutical industry.

Kenneth N. Nigon Schwegman Lundberg Woessner - Attorney

Kenneth Nigon has been an IP lawyer for 32 years.  Ken’s practice focuses on US and international patent protection for computer hardware, software, and business methods. Ken is a co-chair and a member of the Practising Law Institute faculty for the annual Advanced Patent Prosecution Workshop. Ken is a contributing author for Electronic and Software Patents: Law and Practice, a treatise published by BNA Books. Ken is a past-president of the Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association and has served on the board of directors and held many committee leadership positions in the American Intellectual Property Law Association where he currently serves as vice-chair of the Patent Relations with the USPTO Committee.  He earned recognition and is listed in Chambers & Partners America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, in The Best Lawyers in America and in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers.

Joel Shertok, Ph.D. Advanced Plasma Solutions - Director of Technical Services

Dr. Joel Shertok received his B.E. in Chemical Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York City and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University. Dr. Shertok has spent an extensive career in industrial process research and process development, working for such companies as Union Carbide (Bound Brook, NJ) and Amoco Corporation (Atlanta, GA and Naperville, IL) all in a variety of senior managerial and technical positions. Dr. Shertok’s particular area of expertise is in process development, scale-up, and commercialization of new processes and products, from the bench to pilot plant to full manufacture. Dr. Shertok is also committed to the AmpTech accelerator group which catalyzes the development and strategic planning of diverse and cutting-edge  prototypes. 

Patrick Kelly, Riverside Law - Partner

Pat's experience in the Life Sciences industry began as an academic scientist culminating in the successful completion of his Ph.D. in molecular biology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Pat began his career in patent law in 1991 when he joined an intellectual property boutique working as a patent agent by day while attending law school in the evening. Following law school graduation, Pat developed a robust practice advising pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and scientific instrumentation companies and venture capitalists in all facets of patent law.
